RFID Wallets vs Blocking Cards: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Three products claim to solve the same problem. An RFID wallet wraps everything in a shielded shell. Sleeves slide over individual cards. A blocking card drops into a slot and covers the whole billfold. They are not equivalent, and the differences show up in the first week of carrying them.

RFID wallets: strongest in theory, weakest in practice

A full shielded wallet is the most complete protection on paper, because everything inside sits behind a conductive barrier. The problem is behavioural. You have to actually replace your wallet, the shielded ones tend to be thicker and stiffer than the one you already like, and the moment you pull a card out to tap, the protection is irrelevant anyway.

There is also a failure mode nobody advertises: the shielding is only as good as the closure. A wallet gaping open in a back pocket is a wallet with a gap in its shield.

Sleeves: correct, tedious, and abandoned within a month

Individual sleeves are the most literal solution — one shield per card, no ambiguity about geometry. They are also the least likely to still be in use six months later. Every tap means pulling the card out of a sleeve and pushing it back in, in a queue, with someone behind you. Human beings do not sustain that.

If you carry exactly one contactless card and rarely use it, a sleeve is fine. Otherwise the friction wins.

Blocking cards: the compromise that actually gets carried

A blocking card asks nothing of you after the first thirty seconds. You keep the wallet you like, you tap the way you always did, and one card covers everything in the slot. The trade-off is that you are trusting a manufacturer's claim about coverage rather than a visible physical barrier around each card.

That is why the technology matters here more than in the other two categories. A passive shielding card depends on where it sits. An active jamming card, which harvests the reader's own field and broadcasts interference, is far less sensitive to stacking order.

What about phone cases and 'faraday pouches'?

A faraday pouch is genuinely effective — it is also a bag you have to open. For car key fobs, where relay attacks against keyless entry are a real and growing problem, a pouch is the right tool. For everyday cards, it is the sleeve problem again with extra steps.

Cost over three years

Price the options over the life you will actually get out of them. A shielded wallet is a one-off purchase you may dislike. Sleeves are cheap and get lost. Blocking cards last as long as the plastic does, and multi-card bundles bring the per-wallet cost down sharply — which is the argument for buying a bundle once rather than a single premium card per person.

How to decide in one minute

If you were already shopping for a new wallet, buy a shielded one and add a blocking card inside it. If you like your wallet, buy a blocking card and stop there. If you own exactly one contactless card and use it twice a year, a sleeve is sufficient. If your concern is a car key rather than a bank card, buy a faraday pouch instead — different frequency, different attack, different product.

The test that settles it

Whatever you buy, verify it once. Closed wallet against a self-checkout reader should fail. Open card against the same reader should succeed. If a product cannot pass that test in your hands, its review count does not matter.
